Bowen Center breaks ground on new facility to offer expanded care in Plymouth

Bowen Center broke ground on a new facility in Plymouth today, signaling its commitment to the community and to expanding on its new integrated approach to health care.  

Located at 2920 Miller Dr. in Plymouth, southwest of U.S. 30 and Pioneer Drive, the project is expected to be completed in fall 2024. It will offer expanded primary health care, mental and behavioral health care, addiction recovery treatment, and life skills coaching services. Future services may also include optometry and dentistry. 

“We are so excited to begin construction on what will be an awesome facility right here in Marshall County,” said Carol Hostetler, Bowen Center Board Member. “I live in Bremen, and like many of you, we have experienced some disruption in our primary health care services. Bowen Center is focused on increasing the availability of primary and mental health care services in the communities that we serve.” 

On September 7, Bowen Center officials cut the ribbon for a Health Clinic co-located inside its mental health outpatient office on Illinois Street in Plymouth. The aim was to provide patients with primary health care immediately while the new building is under construction. 

“Many of you joined us as we cut the ribbon on our co-located clinic in our current building over on Illinois street,” said Shannon Hannon, Bowen Center's Chief Operations Officer. “So, you may be asking, ‘why are you doing this?’ The honest answer is Marshall County couldn't wait. We couldn't wait for this new building to be built. We needed to respond immediately.”

Dr. Siquilla Liebetrau, Bowen Center Vice President, Clinical Services, agrees that the stakes are high.

“Every 11 minutes, someone in the United States dies by suicide,” said Dr. Liebetrau. “Research tells us that individuals who die by suicide have not reached out to a therapist for care, BUT they have seen their primary care provider within 30 days of their death. That tells us that by embedding mental health care in primary care, we can save lives.”  

Bowen Center President/CEO Dr. Rob Ryan says the highly visible location will also have positive effects on the health of area residents.

“Imagine, if you will, you are traveling down US 30, and you come up to Oak Rd. and see a sign that reads ‘Today Trevor is 7 Years sober’ or ‘Today a family was reunited!’,” he said. “I truly believe there are people struggling alone in Marshall County that will reach out, will get help with their physical or mental health simply because of our move.” 

The building project is the second to be launched by Bowen Center. A new building in Whitley County is expected to open by the end of 2023.
